How Do I Take Care Of My Pool Cover?

April 15, 2019 By Jane Merritt

It is about time to remove your pool cover from your pool and start getting ready for the upcoming swim season.  There are two types of pool covers: safety covers and water bag covers.

SAFETY COVERS: The main benefit of a safety cover is that it prevents  someone from accidently falling into the pool and possibly drowning.  You can get this type of cover in solid or mesh.  A solid cover keeps all the rain and sunlight out of the pool.  With a solid safety cover, if you close a clear blue pool you typically open a clear blue pool.  The other safety cover option is the mesh cover.  A mesh cover allows rain and sunshine to pass through the cover, so pool owners typically open a green pool.  Pool Safety Covers should last you for more than one winter season.   A safety cover, if you take care of it, should last between 10 and 15 years.  Proper care and storage will mean a longer life for the cover. The key is knowing what to do to extend the life of your pool safety cover.

Here are four simple steps for taking care of your pool safety cover

Step # 1  Remove the safety cover from the pool and lay it in the yard or on the  driveway.

Step # 2  Get all the debris off: leaves, sticks, pine needles, etc.

Step # 3  Use a cover cleaner such as GLB Cover Care. Use your pool brush on the pole with the GLB Cover Care to scrub the dirt off and then hose it back down again.  GLB Cover Care helps preserve the material of the safety cover by keeping it conditioned over the summer  and helps prevent dry rot.

Step # 4  Fold it (you do not need to make sure it 100% dry) and store it up off the floor out of reach of rodents.

WATER BAG COVERS:  Water bag covers are made from a tarp like material and secured with water bags every 8 feet around your pool.  They are made to be disposable, but we have a couple of tips if you would like to try to get more than one year out of one!

Step #1  Always clean all the organic debris off the cover using GLB Cover Care.

Step #2  Place a large,  black trashcan in the area you would like to store your water bag cover.

Step #3  Wad up the cover and place into the trash can- do not fold cover or make sharp edges.

Step #4  Pour the rest of the GLB cover Care over the cover and then fill the rest of the trashcan with water.  Secure the lid of the trash can with duct tape. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 864.855.1281 (Easley) or 864.882.8244 (Sene
